Chief Gerald McEwin

Chief Gerald McEwin, joined the Stratford Police Service in January of 1968. A life-long resident of Stratford, Chief McEwin has distinguished himself through his service to the community as both a police officer and volunteer on a long list of committees and organizations.

Chief McEwin has risen through the ranks of the Stratford Police Service. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1986 and Inspector in 1990. In June of 1992 he was appointed as Deputy Chief and in October of 1996 he was appointed as the Service's fifteenth Chief of Police.

Chief McEwin has undertaken numerous professional development initiatives that have been commensurate with the ranks and positions he has held during his career. The Chief represents the Service on a variety of committees, including the Perth County Task Force on Crystal Methamphetamine, where his law enforcement insight and experience have been invaluable.

He is an active member of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police; its current Director of Zone 5 as well as a sitting member of the Corporate Liaison Committee. The Chief is also a member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the Rotary Club of Stratford. Chief McEwin is a Board member with the local branch of the St. John's Ambulance and the Stratford Hockey Club, Inc. (Stratford Cullitons).

During his career, Chief McEwin has garnered many commendations and has been awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal with 30 and 40 year bars, the St. John's Ambulance Service Medal and the Queen's Jubilee Medal. In 2008, the Chief was invested as a Member of Order of Merit of the Police Forces by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean.
 

Deputy Chief John Bates

John Bates was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Stratford Police Service in September of 2006.  Prior to his appointment in Stratford, he served for 21 years with the Brantford Police Service.

Deputy Chief Bates' policing experience includes uniform patrol, traffic enforcement, collision reconstruction, major crime investigation and tactical response along with the performance of a wide variety of command and administrative roles and responsibilities.

Deputy Chief Bates' professional development has included an array of police training courses and self-directed educational endeavours.  Deputy Chief Bates has completed of a number of courses at both the Ontario and Canadian Police Colleges and has earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Justice Studies from the University of Guelph-Humber.   He holds diplomas in both Management Studies and Police Administration from McMaster University and is a graduate of the Police Foundations Leadership Program at Humber College.  The Deputy is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia and has earned designation as a Certified Municipal Manager Level III - Police Executive through the auspices of the Ontario Municipal Management Institute.

Deputy Chief Bates is a member of the International, Canadian and Ontario Associations of Chiefs of Police and is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates.  As is typical of his colleagues, he is a past and present member of several boards and service organizations. 

In 2005, Deputy Chief Bates was awarded the Police Exemplary Service medal.
